Access layer switches connect end devices to the network, providing VLAN segmentation, PoE, and uplink connectivity to distribution or core layers.

Role of Access Layer Switches

Access switches are the first point of network connectivity for end-user devices such as PCs, IP phones, Wi-Fi access points, cameras, and IoT devices . They typically sit at the edge of the LAN and forward traffic upstream to distribution or core switches. Key functions include VLAN assignment, PoE delivery, local traffic forwarding, and port density management .
