What is a Cold Connector?

A fiber optic cold connector, also known as a mechanical splice or fast connector, is designed to join optical fibers using mechanical alignment rather than fusion splicing. It contains a pre-polished fiber stub and uses index-matching gel or mechanical clamping to align the bare fiber with the stub inside the connector body, allowing optical signals to pass with minimal loss . The term "cold" indicates that no heat or power is required for installation .

They support bare fiber, 900 µm buffered fiber, and 2.0/3.0 mm jacketed cables, providing versatility across installation environments .

Installation Overview

  1. Strip the fiber coating and clean the bare fiber.
  2. Insert the fiber into the connector body and align it with the pre-polished stub.
  3. Clamp or lock the fiber in place using the connector's mechanical mechanism.
