Installation of distribution boxes and cable trays for distribution boxes

The installation of distribution boxes and cable trays follows a structured sequence: planning, material preparation, support installation, tray alignment, connection, bonding, and cable laying.

1. Planning and Preparation

Before any physical installation, review the approved shop drawings and coordinated drawings to determine tray routes, distribution box locations, and clearances from other services. Ensure all civil works are completed and the area is clean and accessible. Verify that all materials, including cable trays, ladders, trunking, distribution boxes, and accessories, are available and free from damage, corrosion, or deformities .

2. Material Handling and Storage

  • Store trays, ladders, and trunking horizontally on a flat surface with timber supports at intervals of about 1 meter.
  • Cover materials to protect from moisture, sunlight, and dust.
  • Inspect all items for compliance with approved submittals and remove unsuitable materials from the site .

3. Support Installation

  • Mark support locations according to the approved layout.
  • Fix threaded rods, 'L' angles, or slotted 'C' channels to the building structure, maintaining a maximum spacing of 1.2–1.5 meters for trays and 2 meters for trunking.
  • Provide additional supports for bends, branches, and offsets to prevent sagging .
  • Install seismic restraints where required and ensure supports are directly attached to slabs or structural elements .

4. Tray, Ladder, and Box Installation

  • Align trays, ladders, and trunking straight and level.
  • Connect sections using standard fittings, leaving appropriate gaps for expansion.
  • Secure distribution boxes at designated locations, ensuring proper alignment with tray routes.
  • Use spring knots or clamps to firmly attach trays and trunking to supports .
  • Install cable/wire retaining bars in positions where cables might fall when covers are removed .

5. Bonding and Earthing

  • Install copper earth bonding straps along the full length of trays, trunking, and ladders.
  • Bond all joints and connect the system to the main earthing terminal at the nearest point .
  • Ensure all unused holes in trays or boxes are sealed with grommets to maintain safety and integrity .

6. Cable Laying

  • Lay cables neatly within trays, ladders, or trunking, separating by voltage and function.
  • Use cable ties or straps to organize cables and leave slack for expansion or future adjustments.
  • Ensure sufficient clearance for maintenance and access .

7. Final Checks

  • Inspect all installed trays, ladders, trunking, and distribution boxes for alignment, secure fixing, and absence of damage.
  • Apply paint to cut ends and label all trays and boxes as per project requirements.
  • Verify compliance with applicable standards and project specifications . Following this sequence ensures a safe, organized, and code-compliant installation of distribution boxes and cable trays, facilitating future maintenance and minimizing operational risks.
