Overview

Wide-module optical modules, often referred to as large form-factor or high-density optical modules, are used in high-speed data networks to transmit and receive optical signals over fiber. They perform optoelectronic conversion, turning electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa, and typically operate at the physical layer of the OSI model . These modules are essential in data centers, telecom networks, and high-performance computing environments where high bandwidth and reliability are required .

Structure and Components

A wide-module optical module generally includes:

  • Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA): Contains a laser diode (LD) or LED to emit modulated light signals .
  • Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA): Contains a photodetector to convert incoming optical signals back to electrical signals .
  • Driver and Control Circuits: Manage laser output, automatic power control, and signal modulation .

Wide-module optical modules are typically larger than standard SFP or SFP+ modules and include:

  • XFP Modules: Support 10 Gbps transmission and are physically wider and longer than SFP+ modules .
  • QSFP and QSFP-DD Modules: Quad small form-factor pluggable modules supporting 40 Gbps, 100 Gbps, or higher, often using MPO fiber connectors .
  • CFP Modules: Designed for 100 Gbps and above, suitable for long-haul and metro networks .
  • CXP Modules: High-density parallel optical modules providing multiple channels for short-distance multimode links . These modules are hot-swappable and designed to handle higher data rates, multiple channels, or longer distances compared to standard small form-factor modules .
