In a standard household electrical system, there are three main types of conductors: live (hot) wires, neutral wires, and ground (earth) wires. The live wire carries current from the power source to appliances and remains energized at supply voltage, typically around 230V in many countries, even when switches are off . The neutral wire provides a return path for current and is connected to the ground at the main service panel, but it is separate from the live wire . The ground wire is a safety conductor that does not normally carry current; it is connected to the earth to protect against electric shock in case of a fault . In the distribution box (breaker panel), live wires are connected to circuit breakers, neutral wires are connected to a neutral bus bar, and ground wires are connected to a separate grounding bus bar .
