Using the switch in the distribution box

To turn a switch in a distribution box, first ensure the main power is off, then operate the main or individual circuit breakers by flipping them to the “on” or “off” position, following proper safety procedures.

Safety First

Before touching any switch in a distribution box, turn off the main power supply and use a voltage tester to confirm that the circuits are not live. Always wear insulated gloves and avoid contact with exposed wires to prevent electric shock .

Operating the Main Switch

The main switch or main breaker controls the entire electrical supply to the distribution box. To turn it on or off:

  • Locate the main breaker, usually a double-pole MCB in domestic setups .
  • Flip the switch upwards to turn on or downwards to turn off.
  • This action will energize or de-energize all connected circuits in the box .

Operating Individual Circuit Breakers

Individual breakers control specific circuits:

  • Identify the breaker corresponding to the circuit you want to control.
  • Flip the switch up to turn on or down to turn off.
  • For special setups like Powersafe sequential boxes, connectors may need to be pushed fully in and turned clockwise to lock in place, and a key may be required for the final lock .

Sequence for Multi-Phase or Special Boxes

For multi-phase or high-current distribution boxes:

  • Connect or disconnect in the correct sequence: Earth first, then Neutral, followed by Line connectors (L1, L2, L3) .
  • When disconnecting, reverse the sequence: L3 first, then L2, L1, Neutral, and finally Earth.
  • Some boxes have integral micro switches that signal protective devices when locked or unlocked .

Additional Tips

  • Always label circuits to avoid confusion.
  • Ensure proper grounding through the earth bar.
  • If a breaker trips, investigate the cause before resetting by flipping it fully off and then back on .
  • For domestic single-phase boxes, the RCCB protects against leakage currents and should be included in the switching sequence . By following these steps and safety precautions, you can safely turn switches in a distribution box, whether for maintenance, load control, or emergency shutdown.
