Use a fiber microscope or automated inspection scope to examine the connector endface. Focus on the fiber core, cladding, ferrule surface, and epoxy region. Inspect for contamination, pits, chips, cracks, or scratches, especially in the core area, as defects here directly affect signal quality. Follow IEC 61300-3-35 standards for structured assessment, evaluating the four concentric zones of the connector. Always inspect both sides before making a connection to avoid pushing debris deeper into the network .
If contamination is detected, clean the fiber using cartridge or pocket-style cleaners. For single-fiber connectors, rotate the fiber 90 degrees while cleaning; for APC connectors, maintain the same angle as the endface. Avoid scrubbing or cleaning over the same surface multiple times to prevent damage. After cleaning, re-inspect the endface to confirm all debris has been removed .
Beyond visual inspection, use tools like an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) to detect bends, breaks, or reflection points along the pigtail. Measure insertion loss and return loss to ensure the fiber meets performance standards. A simple continuity test can verify the optical path is complete. Abnormal readings may indicate misalignment, internal cracks, or endface damage .
