What is AOC for optical modules

An AOC optical module is a component at each end of an Active Optical Cable (AOC) that converts electrical signals into optical signals and back, enabling high-speed data transmission over fiber.

What is an AOC Optical Module?

An AOC (Active Optical Cable) integrates optical fiber with modules at both ends that contain optical engines. These modules perform electrical-to-optical conversion at the transmitting end and optical-to-electrical conversion at the receiving end, allowing devices to communicate directly over the fiber cable . Unlike traditional optical transceivers, the fiber is permanently attached to the modules, forming a fixed-length, plug-and-play cable assembly .

How It Works

  1. Electrical input from a network interface card (NIC) or switch enters the AOC module.
  2. A laser or optical transmitter converts the electrical signal into light pulses.
  3. The light travels through the fiber optic cable integrated within the AOC.
  4. At the other end, a photodiode or optical receiver converts the light back into an electrical signal for the receiving device . This process allows longer reach than copper DAC cables, immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), and reduced cable weight and thickness, which improves airflow in data centers .

Applications and Advantages

  • High-performance computing (HPC) and AI clusters for rack-to-rack connections.
  • Data centers requiring high-density, long-distance connectivity.
  • Speeds supported range from 10G to 800G, depending on the AOC type and connector (SFP+, SFP28, QSFP+, QSFP28, QSFP-DD, OSFP), .
  • Benefits include low power consumption, lightweight design, ease of installation, and reduced risk of contamination compared to detachable optical transceivers .

Summary

An AOC optical module is essentially the active component at each end of an Active Optical Cable that enables high-speed, reliable, and long-distance optical communication. By integrating the optical transceivers with the fiber, AOCs provide a plug-and-play solution that combines the advantages of fiber optics with the convenience of copper-style cabling, making them ideal for modern data centers and HPC environments .
