What Are Fiber Optic Sensors?

Fiber optic sensors are devices that use optical fibers either as the sensing element itself (intrinsic sensors) or to transmit signals from a remote sensor to processing electronics (extrinsic sensors) . Sensing Principles

Fiber optic sensors operate mainly on two principles:

  • Through-beam sensors: Light from the emitter fiber passes directly to a receiver fiber. An object interrupts the light, reducing the received intensity, which triggers detection .
  • Reflective sensors: Light from the emitter fiber reflects off the object back to the receiver fiber. The increase in received light intensity is used to detect the object . These principles allow detection of virtually any object, including transparent, metallic, or liquid materials, without physical contact .
