Connectors for explosion-proof distribution boxes

Explosion-proof connectors and terminal boxes ensure safe power and signal distribution in hazardous areas, complying with ATEX, IECEx, and other international standards.

Overview

Explosion-proof connectors are designed to prevent ignition of flammable gases, vapors, or dust in hazardous environments. They are commonly used on distribution boxes, terminal boxes, and junction boxes to safely connect and distribute electrical power or signals in industrial settings such as oil and gas facilities, chemical plants, offshore platforms, and other Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21, or Zone 22 hazardous areas .

Types of Explosion-Proof Connectors

  • Plugs and Sockets: ATEX and IECEx certified connectors, such as Marechal Decontactors or Amphenol Star-Line EX™, allow safe connection and disconnection under load in explosive atmospheres. They are available for low-voltage (LV) power, high-current, and signal applications .
  • Multi-contact Connectors: Designed for multiple circuits or signals, supporting up to 37 contacts and currents from 10A to 680A, suitable for complex distribution systems .
  • Decontactors: Integrated plug-and-socket systems with load-break switches, enabling safe maintenance or rapid equipment change-out without risk of sparks .

Types of Protection

Explosion-proof connectors and terminal boxes are classified according to protection types:

  • Ex d (Flameproof): Enclosures can withstand internal explosions without igniting the surrounding atmosphere .
  • Ex e (Increased Safety): Prevents sparks or hot surfaces inside the enclosure .
  • Ex ia (Intrinsic Safety): Limits energy to prevent ignition in circuits .
  • Ex tb (Dust Protection by Enclosure): Protects against combustible dust .
  • Ex op pr (Protected Optical Radiation): For optical signal applications in hazardous areas .

Materials and Construction

  • Aluminum and Stainless Steel: Provide mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and durability in harsh environments .
  • Glass Fiber Reinforced Polyester (GRP): Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and suitable for offshore or chemical applications .
  • Copper-Free Aluminum: Reduces risk of sparking and ensures compliance with flameproof standards .

Installation and Standards

  • Certified for ATEX, IECEx, NEC, and other international standards, ensuring compliance in global hazardous areas .
  • Suitable for Zones 1 & 2 (gas) and Zones 21 & 22 (dust), as well as Class I and Class II Division 2 areas .
  • High IP ratings (IP66, NEMA Type 4X) provide protection against dust and water ingress, ensuring safe operation in challenging conditions .
  • Configurable with various cable glands, terminals, and accessories for customized installations .

Applications

  • Power Distribution: Connecting motors, pumps, and heavy machinery in hazardous areas.
  • Signal Transmission: Safe routing of control and instrumentation signals.
  • Portable Equipment: Mobile machinery, skids, and temporary installations in explosive atmospheres.
  • Maintenance and Safety: Load-break connectors allow safe disconnection for maintenance without shutting down entire systems . Explosion-proof connectors on distribution boxes are essential for ensuring operational safety, compliance with international standards, and reliable performance in hazardous industrial environments. Proper selection of connector type, protection class, and materials is critical to match the specific zone and application requirements.
