Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing aligns two fiber ends within a small housing using an index-matching gel to bridge the microscopic gap:

  • Procedure: Fibers are stripped, cleaned, cleaved, and inserted into a mechanical splice sleeve that holds them in precise alignment .
  • Advantages: Faster and simpler than fusion splicing, requires no power, and is suitable for temporary or emergency repairs. Insertion loss is typically 0.2–0.75 dB, slightly higher than fusion splicing .
  • Applications: Often used for multimode fibers, quick field repairs, or situations where fusion splicing equipment is unavailable .

Practical Considerations in Junction Boxes

  • Organization: Splice trays within junction boxes protect splices and maintain fiber bend radius to prevent signal loss .
  • Protection: Both fusion and mechanical splices are secured with covers or adhesive housings to prevent environmental damage .
  • Maintenance: Regular inspection ensures splices remain clean and intact, preserving low attenuation and high network reliability .
