How to enable PoE on a switch

PoE is typically enabled by default on Cisco switches, but you can manually enable and configure it using the CLI with the power inline auto command.

Enabling PoE

  1. Access the Switch CLI: Connect via console cable or SSH and enter privileged EXEC mode by typing enable.
  2. Enter Global Configuration Mode: Use configure terminal.
  3. Select the Interface: For example, to configure GigabitEthernet0/1, type interface gi0/1.
  4. Enable PoE: Use the command power inline auto. This allows the switch to automatically detect and supply power to connected devices that request it .
  5. Optional Settings:
    • PoE Priority: Assign priority to critical devices using power inline priority {critical|high|low}.
    • Maximum Power: Limit power per port with power inline limit .
    • Static Allocation: Use power inline static to allocate power even if no device is connected, though this consumes switch budget .

Verifying PoE Status

  • Check all ports: show power inline displays PoE status, allocated power, and device detection.
  • Check a specific port: show power inline interface gi0/1 provides detailed per-port information.
  • Interface status: show interface status confirms the port is operational and PoE is active .

Notes and Best Practices

  • Default Behavior: Most Cisco Catalyst switches have PoE enabled by default; simply connecting a powered device (PD) may be sufficient.
  • Device Detection: Cisco switches use CDP or LLDP-MED to negotiate power. Non-LLDP devices may require manual configuration.
  • Power Budgeting: Sum the wattage of all PDs and add 25–30% overhead for cable loss and expansion. Ensure the switch PSU can handle the total load .
  • Monitoring: Regularly check show power inline and enable syslog or SNMP traps for power usage and alarms.
  • Security and Management: Use SSH for remote management, implement ACLs, and segment VLANs for voice, video, and data traffic to maintain QoS and security . By following these steps, you can ensure PoE is enabled, properly configured, and monitored for reliable operation of IP phones, wireless access points, cameras, and other powered devices.
