Relay protection device CT circuit

A CT circuit in a relay protection device converts high primary currents to a safe secondary current for the relay, enabling accurate fault detection and tripping of the circuit breaker.

Role of CTs in Relay Protection

Current transformers (CTs) serve as the primary sensing interface between high-current power circuits and protective relays. They step down large primary currents to standardized secondary currents (commonly 1 A or 5 A) while providing galvanic isolation, allowing relays to safely monitor the system without exposure to high voltages or currents . The CT secondary must accurately represent the primary current waveform, maintaining correct polarity, ratio, and phase to ensure reliable relay operation .

CT Connection to Relays and Trip Circuits

In a typical protection scheme, the CT secondary is connected to the relay input. The relay continuously monitors the current and, upon detecting a fault or abnormal condition, closes its output contact to energize the circuit breaker trip coil (52T), opening the breaker and isolating the faulted section . The DC trip circuit ensures that the relay's decision is transmitted reliably to the breaker, even if AC power is interrupted. The breaker's auxiliary contacts (52a) are used to seal in the trip circuit and indicate breaker status .

Practical Considerations

  • Polarity and Wiring: Correct CT polarity is critical; incorrect wiring is a common cause of false differential trips .
  • Accuracy Class and Ratio: CTs on both ends of a protected element should have identical accuracy and ratio, or the relay should compensate for differences .
  • Dynamic Range: CTs must handle both normal load currents and high fault currents without saturation to ensure dependable relay operation .
  • Differential Protection: For differential schemes, CTs compare currents entering and leaving a zone. Any mismatch due to CT errors or incorrect connections can cause false trips .
  • High-Voltage Applications: In HV systems, CTs are often toroidal with a single primary turn and multiple secondary turns, designed to minimize magnetizing current and leakage effects .

Summary

The CT circuit is a critical link in the protection chain, converting high currents to manageable levels for the relay, ensuring accurate fault detection, and reliably triggering the breaker trip coil. Proper selection, installation, and testing of CTs, along with correct wiring and polarity, are essential for the protection system to operate as intended .
