The production begins with selecting the appropriate fiber type—single-mode for long-distance, low-loss applications, or multi-mode for short-distance, high-bandwidth needs . The fiber cables are supplied on reels and cut to the required lengths using automated cutting machines for consistency and efficiency . The outer jacket and buffer coating, typically 3.0mm, 2.0mm, or 0.9mm, are stripped using specialized strippers, and the fiber is cleaned with alcohol to remove dust and residues .
Next, the fiber is prepared for connector attachment. Epoxy is injected into the connector ferrule, and the cleaned fiber is inserted and cured in an oven to secure bonding . The connector housing and strain relief boot are then assembled. The ferrule end-face is polished using automatic polishing machines and cleaned with ultrasonic equipment to ensure a smooth, contamination-free surface .
Each patch cord undergoes microscopic inspection at 400x magnification to detect scratches or contamination on the ferrule end-face . Performance testing includes insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) measurements to ensure the cord meets international standards. Interferometers may also be used to verify optical performance and connector durability .
After testing, the patch cords are labeled and packaged according to order specifications. Manufacturers adhere to global standards such as CE, CQC, and ROHS to ensure safety, reliability, and environmental compliance . The cords are then ready for deployment in data centers, LANs, telecommunication networks, and other high-speed optical applications .
