Optical cable stripping operation

Optical cable stripping requires careful preparation, precise tool use, and adherence to safety protocols to ensure clean fiber ends and optimal signal transmission.

Preparation and Safety

Before starting, ensure a clean, well-lit workspace free from dust and debris. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from sharp fiber shards, and keep tweezers and tape handy to safely collect cut fiber pieces . Inspect the cable for kinks, bends, or damage and confirm the cable type and diameter to select the appropriate stripping tools .

Tools Required

  • Fiber optic cable stripper (blade, rotary, or hand-held)
  • Fiber cleaver for precise end-face preparation
  • Alcohol wipes or cleaning solution for cleaning stripped fibers
  • Microscope or visual fault locator (VFL) for inspection
  • Tweezers and tape for handling fiber scraps

Stripping Procedure

  1. Mark the stripping points on the cable according to the termination or splicing requirements.
  2. Remove the outer jacket carefully using the cable stripper, avoiding damage to inner strength members or fibers. For armored or loose tube cables, remove the armor and inner jacket first, then separate buffer tubes and strength members .
  3. Expose the fibers and strip the buffer coating (typically 900 µm tight buffer or 250 µm buffered fiber) using the fiber stripper. Adjust the blade depth to match the fiber diameter .
  4. Clean the stripped fiber with alcohol wipes to remove debris, gel, or residue, ensuring a smooth surface for termination .
  5. Cleave the fiber using a fiber cleaver to create a perpendicular, defect-free end face. Follow manufacturer instructions for cleave length and alignment .
  6. Inspect the cleaved fiber under a microscope or with a VFL to confirm smoothness and absence of defects .

Repetition and Consistency

For multi-fiber cables, repeat the stripping, cleaning, and cleaving process for each fiber individually. Maintain precision and consistency to ensure reliable terminations and optimal network performance .

Safety and Handling

  • Never touch the fiber core with bare hands.
  • Dispose of fiber scraps properly to prevent injury.
  • Avoid bending the cable beyond its minimum bend radius or applying excessive pulling force . Following this procedure ensures clean, precise fiber ends, reduces the risk of signal loss, and supports long-term network reliability.
